Climbing Castle Rock

Castle Rock State Park and its surrounding area is one of the larger climbing regions in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, hosting a variety of sport, traditional, and toprope routes and bouldering problems. The bouldering at Castle Rock is considered some of the best in the state.

“The rock is mostly sandstone, making it fairly easy on the hands and dynos quite slap happy.”

“Long before Castle Rock State Park acquired bolted sport routes, the small sandstone outcrops scattered throughout the madrones, live oaks and bays have offered climbers challenging high-standard boulder problems and extended training circuits similar to those found in the famous enchanted forest of Fontainebleau near Paris.”
